The story of Princess – What have they done to you?

The story of Princess – What have they done to you?

When we look at Princess we are ashamed. Why do people such evil things?

Princess was found as she was seriously injured and she was pregnant. This was in 2011 in Coral Bay. Someone has tried to kill Princess, and probably struck with a heavy object to her.

Her head was seriously injured and it was not clearly if she survived. Her puppies were born dead because of the beatings.

The scars have healed, but the tracks are still visible on her body. Also her psychological wounds are healed, today she trusts people again.

Please think twice before you buy a Husky in Cyprus

Hello Cypriots!

Imagine the following situation:

You are forced now to live in Alaska. Without your family, because your familiy remains in Cyprus. Without your car. Now you must travel on foot any distance in the freezing cold, and the distances in Alaska are huge! Your beloved Souvla or Meze there will be no more. If you’re hungry, then you need to eat what you find on your way. Of course, you will not be able to console himself with Zivania, it´s still snow everywhere which you can „”drink”“.

Would you feel under these circumstances still like a real Cypriot ? Or would this life worth living for you? No? (more…)

Zebedee – is now called Oskar

Hi everybody,

I am Oskar. Formerly called Zebedee.

I am now living with my family in Beckedorf/Germany and I have now already captured the hearts of my people.

But that is not difficult, because I am a very nice guy. I knew it always been, but now it’s official.

My family is ok too. Especially with the food, it works fine. I have all wrapped around “my” little finger and I am very eager to do everything right.

Pongo’s story – Halfway to a Happy Ending!

This story is full of ‘halfway’s’ so let’s hope we get the whole way to a happy ending.

Julie was driving back from Larnaca airport on Wednesday 5th March, half way home in fact.  There wasn’t a lot of traffic about and Julie was planning what to do with the second half of the evening.  Looking ahead up the highway her heart jumped into her mouth.  Half way across the highway, standing still and looking terrified was a dog.  Her first thought was “how on earth can Bambi (her own black pointer) have got here?” She really though it was her.

Her second thought was that she had to stop.  Luckily, at this moment, there were no cars behind her so she was able to pull over safely and stop on the side.  When she was half way out of the car, two other cars came speeding down behind her, only just breaking in time to avoid hitting the dog.

Lea-YoucaringRecently we have reported about Lea´s story. You can read it here: Lea is looking for a sponsor.

Now, we have news about our poor Lea.

We have shown the X-Ray of Lea´s leg vets in Germany and asked for a chance to heal Lea’s leg. In Germany there are techniques to make Lea healthy again. Now we are in need of help. The surgery costs around 750 euros, which we can not afford.

We ask all people out there to help Lea. Even if you can donate a few euros, it would be a very great help.

Please help Lea, to start a normal dog life. She is too young to go stale at the shelter.

A donation for Lea’s health and freedom.

Saturday 22nd February – Sausage Supper in aid of CyDRA and CYPNS

Three members of the committee headed off to Limassol for Lesley’s fundraising Sausage Supper evening.  Two members got somewhat lost on the way, but eventually arrived at the right place at the right time!

There were nearly 60 people present to show their support and we all enjoyed a very pleasant evening.  The sausage supper was very well enjoyed by all  and the dessert of jelly and ice cream was an additional treat.

After supper we adjourned to the music room where we were entertained by Shades of Grey and at the break there was also a music quiz.  We are still trying to work out how the winning team scored 2 points more than were available in total!? It was probably the quickest quiz ever as there was barely time to write down all the answers, but we were pleased we knew so many.

Sunday 23rd February – CYDRA’s 3rd Annual General Meeting

The Chair welcomed everyone to the meeting.  All reports have been circulated either before the meeting or immediately afterwards to members and the full set of audited accounts is available for inspection.

Barbara highlighted the difficult year it has been throughout Cyprus and how that has affected everyone.  Shelters had to fight hard to survive and CyDRA has continued to provide what financial support they can, but with everyone suffering financially the knock on effect to charities is obvious.

Barbara thanked Lesley Hey for her amazing fundraising efforts throughout the year, gave details of the dogs re-homed and emphasised that the biggest positive step forward by CyDRA last year was the introduction of the training and education programmes, lead by Carole Husein.

Uschi and Marie have found together a home in Germany.

First the family has fallen in love with Uschi (formerly Ursula) and then they have adopted Marie 3 weeks ago.

They say that it´s very interesting how different the dogs are.

Uschi was on the first night very quiet, Marie went right over the table and benches and is a real whirlwind. If the two don´t sleep they actually play most of the time with each other.

There are nothing more exciting than watching dogs, just when they form a new pack and treat each other!

Venue:  The Fatsa Cafe and Museum, Skarinou, Cyprus

The morning started well – plenty of cloud and no sun!  Every participant was given a sheet to make a shade between cars but they were not needed and it only started to warm up shortly before we finished the workshop.

12 dogs and their owners, many observers and most of Julia’s training team were there.  We started with some theory and then conditioned the dogs to the clicker.  We had many short breaks throughout the morning and also worked the dog for very short sessions and in turn to avoid saturation or over kill!

Poppy – she hit the jackpot

Poppy has found her forver home. She arrived this morning in England.

She hit the jackpot with a wonderful family. Two children, a german pointer and a cat. We were so worried Poppy will be completely scared and hide in a corner somewhere. She did fantastic.

By now she is sleeping on the sofa, and sniffing around the English country side. Lucky little girl. I wish all dogs from here could have the same fortune.

At the airport, she was the calmest one. All the other dogs were crying and howling, she just sat in her crate and then finally laid down and just relaxed. It was amazing to see.

YAT´s = Young Animal Trainer

We also have YAT´s (young animal trainer) in our trainer team.  This is CyDRA’s Young Animal Trainers Group. We set this up to encourage kids and dogs working together as past experience has taught me that they are a great combination.

There are three members at the moment and as they are only 11 years old that is enough to start with.  They are Natalia, Sandra and Abigail.  They are all friends and all very sensible children.  This is good for us because of the socialisation aspect and good for them as they learn to clicker train and also to look at health, diet and general welfare.  They are given a project – they all have a journal to complete.  In their journals they can write about  anything they do with animals.  They can inset photos or drawings  they have done themselves.  It´s their journal they can plan it any way they like.

After threats that he will be shot by village people bothered only by his presence, the woman had removed him immediately and put him in a private kennel. There he found a place at the moment.

Her financial resources were always scarce and so she accept an offer from a Russian warehouse owner. Hercules should guard his warehouse. But when she came to visit him, she removed him again, because he was in a worse state, both physical and emotional, as he was first found. He was very frightened and skinny. Paddy was found before the gates of the PAWS shelter. He was simply tied there, with a garbage and a piece of bread. He was hurt, so he was immediately taken to the vet.

He limped, had a bump on his head and his eye was injured. A X-ray image shows that somebody had shot him in the body. He had several pellets in the body and also behind his eye. Also his front leg was broken by a bullet.

Oliver was rescued from a municipality pound. His brother died there. Oliver was lucky that one of our foster homes could take him home. He had recovered there very well from the strains.

The Be a Tree program had not been forgotten by these young people!  They also asked some very sensible and interesting questions and we could have stayed longer to talk to them but we had disrupted their classes enough.  We were only supposed to be with a couple of classes but word travelled fast and the other classes all wanted to come and see the dogs!

We were very pleased to be invited to The Grammar School, Junior, on Wednesday and Friday to join each year group’s assembly.

Wednesday and Friday saw us delivering our Be A Tree presentation where we Spoke to the children about staying safe around their own dogs, friends and relatives’ dogs and also dogs they don’t know.  It was amazing how many of the children have at least one dog of their own and so we were able to relate our presentation to the children’s own experiences.  We explained how they can assess how a dog is feeling, by recognising signs a dog may perform which shows his discomfort at being approached or interacted with, how to approach a dog and to know when to walk away.
