Valentino was found running completely distraught on the busy highway on the outskirts of the shelter. He no longer knew where to go and ran into the traffic again and again.
He was very afraid to come to us. Despite several attempts calling him and trying to entice him with food he still kept running back into the traffic which nearly gave us a heart attack because the traffic stop to give him a chance.
With the help of PAWS staff and a dog that we brought along Valentino finally found some confidence and we were able to bring him to safety. Presumably Valentino was deposited close to PAWS and left to whatever fate befell him.
He’s been at PAWS for a while now and shows no fear towards humans, not even one trace. Although if someone moves fast around him you can certainly tell that he has had some bad experiences with people, but he quickly learned that in the shelter everyone means well towards him.
His previous owner probably had a picture of the breed German Shepherd with the tail docked, so that what they did! Although Valentino looks like a purebred German Shepherd he is it a bit small, but this could possibly be due to poor posture and bad food.
He also has a crippled paw. It is missing a toe and it seems that this is possible from birth. However, this does not affect him in any way..
Valentino will be gradually become more playful as he grows in confidence when he is able to live in safety with a permanent loving home and family. He is very loving and cuddly and enjoys the attention of his nurse. He also goes merrily along on the walks. He is a rather quiet dog.
We recommend dog school for him, because Valentino certainly has a lot to learn and has never lived in a home.
Take a look at the video clip of him, he is such a gentle boy:
